Things To Do Soon: Bell Schedules, School Calendars and Instructional Minutes for 2010-11 The school year is just about over for 2009-10, and pretty soon your administrators will be settling into their summer schedule, and probably taking some vacation. But before they take off, make sure they’ve provided you with next year’s bell schedule, school calendar and the calculation of instructional minutes. You’ll need to establish a deadline that allows your own staff enough time to verify the accuracy of the calculation and be able to reach staff if necessary. Also, if your district is one of the districts in California that is reducing the number of instructional days next year, you definitely need to make sure each grade and site meet all requirements for instructional minutes. So, if you are in doubt, contact your financial auditors and ask them to review the calculation of instructional minutes, the proposed calendar and the proposed bell schedule. This is something they already do routinely as part of the annual financial audit. Yet it’s wise to remember the old cliché: “it’s better to be safe than sorry.” Source: Nancy Walker is Director of District Support Services with the education consulting firm Total School Solutions.
