The National Report Card on Higher Education releases

Measuring Up 2008:
The California Report Card on Higher Education

The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education has released its annual report card examining California’s education system.  In 4 of the 6 indicators used, California has remained static or shown some improvement.  While initially this seems like an overall improvement, one must remember that the state has either remained static or shown slight improvement in areas where it was already seriously lagging.

More Californians overall have earned bachelor’s degrees; however, there are racial disparities.  Forty percent of Whites, aged 25-64, have a bachelor’s degree or higher, while only 10% of Hispanics in the same demographic have obtained a similar level of education.  Hispanics and African-Americans still enroll at much lower ratios, 27% and 35% respectively, than Whites (45%) in institutions of higher education.

Although California has begun its climb toward the heights it once knew during the 1960’s, this report card illustrates that there is still much to do to better serve and educate all of California’s students who wish to obtain a degree.
