A Report on National Green Schools
The Obama Administration is hailing the potential of green technology and is making it a key element of the economic revitalization and recovery effort now underway. Education reform is also a part of this effort, which has led some to conclude, why not marry the two in the name of efficiency? There are many benefits from the inclusion of green technology and building concepts in school construction for students, teachers, and the community.
Currently the Los Angeles Unified School District has 21 green schools planned, which will service 23,600 students. Using the criteria outlined under the Collaborative for High Performing Schools (CHPS), these schools will allow California to lead the way and provide a viable test market for green education. Results from previous studies have shown that these criteria will work, creating cost-saving benefits and improved learning.
The schools overall will be less expensive to run, though will cost 2% more than conventional building initially. The use of natural light and recycling of rain water, along with other strategies, will decrease reliance on both energy and water utilities. The acoustics, colors, and healthier construction choices will also play a role in improving the teaching and learning environment with promises of increased ADA.
While California is not alone on this front, with many schools in New Orleans also participating in this and other green programs, it is a unique opportunity and use of the economic stimulus package coming to California.
